Commercial Rekeying in Marsdale

Two people left over the summer and the keys they handed back came up one short. Nobody is sure whether the missing key was for the front door, the stockroom or both, and the sign-out sheet stopped being filled in a year ago.

In plain words

A business hands out keys as people join and rarely gets every one back as people leave. Rekeying resets that count. Instead of guessing how many copies of the front-door key exist, the cylinders are repinned so only the newly cut set works, and those keys are numbered and signed for. Where turnover is steady, the locksmith can fit interchangeable cores, which let a manager swap a core with a control key in a couple of minutes when someone departs, so the reset becomes routine rather than an event. Either way you end up with a premises where the keyholder list matches the staff list.

Sound familiar?

The drawer behind the counter holds a tangle of keys with tape labels: front old, side, Dave. Some open things, some open nothing, and the hardware-store copies mean the true count drifted long ago past anything written down.

How the visit goes

Illustrative locksmith scene — Marsdale
  1. 1

    Which doors are the landlord's

In a plaza, an office building or a multi-tenant industrial unit, some doors on your floor plan are not yours to rekey. Corridor doors, electrical and mechanical rooms, shared loading doors and the building's fire exits usually sit on the landlord's master system, and a suite entrance may be required to accept the landlord's key as well as yours. The locksmith sorts the openings into two columns before starting: those the lease puts under your control, which get the new plan, and those that stay as they are or need the property manager's say-so. Where a suite door must accept both a tenant key and the building master, it is pinned to do exactly that.

  2. 2

    Retiring the old keys

The job is finished when the old keys are proven dead, not when the new ones work. At every rekeyed opening the locksmith tries a sample of the old keys, including the master if one existed, and confirms that each one enters the keyway and turns nothing. The collected old keys are then cut through with snips in front of the manager and can be handed back as scrap or taken away. Any door deliberately left on its original key is written on the chart in plain words so nobody assumes it changed. That last check is what turns a day of brass work into a genuine reset of who can open the business.

  3. 3

Adding a door without starting over

The pinning records kept from the visit mean the system can grow. When the business takes the unit next door, adds a storage cage or replaces a worn lever set, the new cylinder is pinned into an unused combination on the existing chart and handed a key from the right group, and nobody already carrying a key notices anything changed. That is the value of leaving reserve combinations in a master system rather than using them all up on day one. Keep the locksmith's reference number for the system with the chart, mention it when you call, and a single new door becomes a short visit instead of a fresh plan.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Number of cylinders

The count of openings drives the quote more than anything else: each cylinder is removed, repinned, refitted and tested individually, so a three-door shop and a twelve-office suite are very different jobs.

  2. 2

    Several locations

Rekeying two or three sites onto one keying plan means travel between them and a chart that spans buildings, quoted per site plus the shared design work.

  3. 3

    Padlocks, cabinets and mailboxes

Small locks add up. Each padlock repinned to the door key, each cabinet keyed alike and each mailbox cylinder replaced is listed on its own so you can decide what to include.

Commercial Rekeying: questions

Advice · (289) 432-1115

Can the work be done while we are open?

Yes, and many businesses prefer it. The locksmith works one door at a time, finishing and testing each before starting the next, and leaves the main entrance until a quiet moment or until after closing. Doors staff are using are done last and their new keys are handed over first. Where a business would rather nobody sees the work, an early morning or after-hours window is arranged instead.

Will rekeying affect our alarm system or card readers?

Mechanical rekeying leaves electronics alone: alarm panels, card readers and keypads keep their codes and credentials. What changes is the list of people holding keys, and it is worth updating the alarm company's keyholder list and retiring the codes of anyone who has left at the same time, since keys and codes usually walk out together. Where a door has both a card reader and a keyed override, the override cylinder is rekeyed with the rest.

What happens with our fire exit doors and panic bars?

The outside cylinder on an exit door controls entry only, and it can be rekeyed like any other. The inside stays as it must: one push or one turn, no key, no special knowledge, on the exit door itself and on any door on the way to it. A locksmith will not add a keyed device to the inside of an exit, and will point out one if it already exists.

What the census means at the door

71%

Older homes. About 71% of homes in St. Catharines were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older housing means older frames. Wood that has settled for years leaves strikes slightly out of line, so a bolt drags or needs a lift of the handle. A locksmith expects this and brings the shims, longer screws and strike plates to correct it.

56%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in St. Catharines (2021 Census).

In areas of mixed housing, landlords may own a house here and a few units there. A locksmith can put all of it under one master system so the owner carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.
